How to Control the Behavior of Prev/Next buttons for Embedded Interactions

With the release of Update 3 for Articulate Studio '13, you can now control how the Prev and Next buttons behave for Articulate Engage interactions embedded in Articulate Presenter courses. The navigation buttons can either jump to the previous/next step in the interaction or the previous/next slide in the overall presentation.

Why Is the Button Property Grayed Out?

The Prev/Next player buttons go to property in Presenter will only work when the interaction's playback mode is set to Interactive and the corresponding box to Show previous/next buttons is marked.

If the button property in Presenter is grayed out, it indicates one of the following is true:

  • The interaction's playback mode is set to Interactive, but Show previous/next buttons is unchecked.
  • The interaction's playback mode is set to Linear.
  • The interaction's playback mode is set to Presentation.
  • The course was created in an earlier version of Studio '13 and then updated. (See the next section.)
What Happens to My Existing Projects When I Install the Latest Software Update?

If your course was created with a version of Studio '13 prior to Update 3, which didn't have the Prev/Next buttons go to property, then updated to the latest version, you'll find that the button property is initially grayed out—even if it meets the requirements (see the previous section for details).

To activate the button property in an existing project after updating your software:

  1. Open your course in PowerPoint.
  2. Go to the Articulate tab on the ribbon and click Engage Interaction.
  3. Select the first interaction in the list and click Edit interaction in Articulate Engage.
  4. When Engage opens, click Save and Return to Presenter.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each interaction in your course.
What Happens If I Edit an Interaction Outside of Its PowerPoint Presentation?

If you open an Engage interaction outside of the PowerPoint presentation where it's embedded and change the playback mode, Presenter won't know that the interaction has been modified. To update the presentation with your changes:

  1. Open your course in PowerPoint.
  2. Go to the interaction slide in your course and click Edit in Engage.
  3. When Engage opens, click Save and Return to Presenter.
